I’m always eager to answer the question, “What do you do?” I was stunned, however, the first time someone heard my “pitch,” and replied, “Oh, I know someone else who does that too.”
A great pitch is amazing – in sports and in business. It is, in both environments, a skill that demands development, practice, and perhaps most importantly – versatility. Because even the perfect pitch, served-up again and again, will eventually become less effective.
While your business’ offerings may be consistent, your potential customers are not. Their perception of you and what you’re telling them is affected by their own experiences – what they believe they know about your product or service. And if we do not provide a sense of uniqueness that sets us apart from competitors, chances are we will not be invited to compete.
Take the time to develop your perfect pitch, and practice it until you’re comfortable delivering it, and fans are cheering for it. And once that that happens, start working on another. Because playing in the big leagues, you never know when you’ll have to change things up to keep your game alive.
